There are drugs that make us feel good, happy, at peace, content, loving. I'm taking opiates for pain. They are great. Can anyone tell me why they are universally bad for us, leading to addiction and death? Is this a Protestant contrivance?
They have not always been considered bad. They have been seen as holy and a gift from the gods. And among the substances that we prohibit or control, opiates are the LEAST harmful, much less so than alcohol, smoking cigarettes (as the delivery system for nicotine), stimulants, or even marijuana. They are also not the most addictive, nicotine being the most highly addictive of the list above.
